1487 · Stephen the Great · UNESCO monument
The oldest surviving foundation of Stephen the Great, and a fresco without equal in the Orthodox world: sixteen mounted soldier saints behind the emperor Constantine. It is the smallest of the UNESCO monuments and the easiest to miss, because everything that matters is inside.
If you only have a minute
The oldest surviving church among Stephen the Great's foundations, and the smallest of the UNESCO monuments. The Cavalcade of the Holy Cross, with Constantine the Great at its head, is a fresco without parallel in the Orthodox world.
What you find only here
On the west wall of the narthex, sixteen mounted soldier saints follow a white horse ridden by the Archangel Michael, behind the emperor Constantine. It is called the Cavalcade of the Holy Cross and, according to art historians, it is an original composition that was never painted in any other church in the whole of Byzantine-tradition art. Outside Moldavia it appears nowhere; in Moldavia, only here and, on a smaller scale, at Arbore. Stephen had commissioned it as a prayer: he was calling the heavenly army to the aid of his earthly one.
Open daily, but being a village church, it is best to call ahead.
The oldest surviving foundation of Stephen and the scaled-down model of everything that follows: the side apses, the tower over the nave, the little niches under the eaves.
You arrive in the courtyard and look around without knowing where. These are 4 places on the walls that people who know look for.
Sixteen mounted soldier saints, led by the Archangel Michael on a white horse, behind the emperor Constantine. It is not on the facade, as people think: you see it only if you go in.
It is the smallest of the UNESCO churches in Bucovina, and that is exactly what makes it intimate.
Pătrăuți is painted on the outside only on the western wall. The fresco was discovered as late as the 1980s, under plaster.
The row of small niches, the mark of Stephen's architecture, appears here in its early form.
