Weekend in Bucovina
Friday night you arrive in the dark, Saturday the rooster wakes you, Sunday you leave with red cheeks and a wheel of sheep's cheese in the boot. Three nights is exactly what it takes for Bucovina to settle into your bones: one mountain, one monastery, two long meals and an evening by the fire.

Limestone towers at 1,634 m, raised, legend says, to guard the treasure of Petru Rareș's wife, hidden here as she fled the Turks. Drive to Hotel Alpin Rarău, then walk the path to the foot of the rocks; from town, on foot, along one of three marked trails. All of them, step by step, under Mountain trails.

Your weekend map
Arrive after 3 pm, self check-in, bags down. Dinner in the centre at a Bistro, next to the Town Hall: whisky-glazed ribs and homemade desserts. Then the first evening in the back garden, by the fire.
Coffee up at the hut by the Pietrele Doamnei: the rocks legend raised to guard the treasure of Petru Rareș's wife, with all of Bucovina unrolled below. On the way down, the Rarău Hermitage, the monastery on the Izvorul Alb road, where the bell rings against the forest and where, for a quarter of an hour, nobody says a word.
Drive down to Moldovița: the painted monastery, with its yellow and the Siege of Constantinople on the wall, then, in season, a ride on the Huțulca steam train through Hutsul villages. One valley, two worlds.
A long meal at Popasul Baciului: soup served in a bread loaf, tochitură stew, pies, portions from another era. Or, for something finer, Hanul Bucovinei next door: beef tenderloin, an open kitchen and sweet dumplings for dessert. Home, fire, a sky full of stars and stories until late.
Coffee in the grass. To the market for sheep's cheese wrapped in fir bark, blueberry liqueur and homemade bread, then the Wood Art Museum, a walk from the house. Check-out by 11 am, or later if the house is free.
It's a suggestion, not a schedule. Change anything; we know the places, you know your mood.
Câmpulung Moldovenesc is where Bucovina opens in every direction: Rarău watches over the town, the painted monasteries are half an hour away, the steam train puffs up the Moldovița valley and Vatra Dornei waits to the west. You don't lose your days on the road: everything is under an hour, and in the evening you come back not to a guesthouse room but to a whole house, with a garden, a fire and a sky full of stars. For peace of mind, the road climbs to the Rarău Hermitage, the monastery on the Rarău road where the service is heard against the forest and the silence is of another kind.
