Limestone towers at 1,634 m, raised, legend says, to guard the treasure of Petru Rareș's wife, hidden here as she fled the Turks. Drive to Hotel Alpin Rarău, then walk the path to the foot of the rocks; from town, on foot, along one of three marked trails. All of them, step by step, under Mountain trails.

Your trail map

Start gently, near the house: 600 metres away, the Pârâul Mesteacăn spring, cold and clean, where the town has quenched its thirst for as long as anyone remembers; fill your bottles. From there the Măgura trail climbs gently through hay meadows. From the top you see the Pietrele Doamnei and the silted-up dams in the valley (the trail, step by step: Mountain trails). Towards evening, the Istrate viewpoint, with a picnic above Câmpulung, then home to the garden for tea or a glass of wine, the map on the table for the next morning.

The big day on Rarău: climb to the foot of the Pietrele Doamnei, the rocks of the legend of Petru Rareș's wife, then along the ridge to the weather station, the white dome at 1,536 m with views in every direction. The Piatra Șoimului viewpoint for the glass panorama, and on the way down the Moara Dracului Gorge, cold water between stone walls.
Portions for someone who has walked all day: soup in a bread loaf and tochitură at Popasul Baciului. Then feet up on the garden sofas, by the fire.
Choose by how your legs feel: Slătioara old-growth forest, the UNESCO forest with 400-year-old spruces; a stage of the Via Transilvanica, which passes 6 km from the house; or, for the fit, Giumalău Peak, the highest around, a full day with 360° views.
It's a suggestion, not a schedule. Change anything; we know the places, you know your mood.
Few places in Romania have so many trails at such short distances: Pietrele Doamnei and the whole Rarău massif 33 minutes away, Giumalău 13 minutes from the trailhead, the Slătioara old-growth forest 32, Via Transilvanica 6 km. At La Cuib you sleep at the foot of the mountain, with a fully equipped kitchen that is yours from first light, a place to dry boots and a garden where you put your feet up in the evening. And Bucovina Ultra Rocks, July's mountain race, starts from the town's ski slope.
