What the walking is like

The oldest way up the massif: laid out in 1835, it ran from the Durău hermitage to the high ground. It is also the fastest climb to Dochia, 3 h – 3 h 30 min, despite 1,180 m of ascent over 7.3 km. From the centre of the resort, climbing towards the park headquarters, the view opens to Piatra Lată, Panaghia, Toaca and Piatra Ciobanului. The tarmac ends by the Cascada hotel, and the path enters the forest between the Nican and the Fântânii streams. Past the county road the gradient eases to a rest spot by the water catchment basin for Durău, then steepens, and in fifteen to twenty minutes reaches the Fântânele hut.

  From in front of the Fântânele hut the panorama opens towards Durău and the Bistrița Mountains, with Măgura Grințieșului in the foreground, and to the left the western side of the massif, with Toaca and Panaghia.

  From Fântânele you can reach Poiana Viezuri in about an hour on the yellow-triangle link trail, on the way to the Duruitoarea waterfall.
