What the walking is like

The tour of the limestone rocks of legend, with a more technical climb onto the third rock, from where you see all the surrounding mountains: Bistrița, Călimani, Suhard, Stânișoara, Giumalău and, in good weather, Ceahlău. The trail you do from the hut after a coffee.

What we'd tell you at the gate

  • No small children on the third rock: it's exposed.
  • Winter: crampons, at the very least.

Not to miss on the way

  • 1

The Pietrele Doamnei stand at 1,634 m and are reef limestone: the corals of a warm sea 140 million years ago, raised to the sky. Legend has it that Petru Rareș's wife hid her treasure here, and the mountain's name comes from Rareș.

  • 2

Next to them, Piatra Zimbrului: a vertical limestone wall 600 m long and 100 m high, which climbers ascend on climbing routes. Did you know that the bison (zimbri), the animals that gave it its name, disappeared from Bucovina's forests in the 18th century? The rock remembers them.

  • 3

The Bats' Cave, 1 km from the rocks, is the largest “gravitational” cave in Romania, but it's closed to visitors: the limestone blocks are unstable. You admire it from the path.

  • 4

Geo Bogza wrote that Rarău "here represents the fundamental dimension of the world". Up there, with Bucovina at your feet, you understand him.

What else you can do on the trail

  • Climbing: routes on the Pietrele Doamnei and Piatra Zimbrului, for those with gear and experience.
  • Skywalk: the glass platform at Piatra Șoimului (2025), ten minutes from the hut.
  • Photography: sunrise in the forest and morning mist between the trunks; tripod recommended.

What grows and what moves along the trail

Flora

  • subalpine meadows with blueberry, cranberry and juniper
  • old spruce stands in the Giumalău–Valea Putnei old-growth forest
  • yellow gentian and arnica in the ridge clearings
  • isolated dwarf pine towards the summit

Fauna

  • capercaillie, specially protected in the old forest above Valea Putnei
  • red deer and wild boar in the forests at the base
  • brown bear, especially at the blueberries, August–September
  • raven and common buzzard on the ridge

The species above are those documented in the area by the protected-area administration; what you see depends on season, hour and luck.
