What the walking is like

From the East station up Izvorul Alb on the road, past the gorge and Piatra Buhei; at 3 km, left up the Limpedea valley, past the old limestone quarry. After 2 km the path enters the forest and climbs steadily to Șaua Ciobanilor, the hardest section. From there, the way is shared with the old-forest trail to Rarău Peak and the hut.

Not to miss on the way

  • 1

The Izvorul Alb gorge and Piatra Buhei, in the first kilometres, are the limestones that gave the stream its name: the water runs white out of the rock after rain. The spring where you fill your bottle is 1.5 km from the house.

  • 2

The Popii Rarăului (1,628 m) are limestone towers lined up along the ridge like priests at a service, hence the name. You see them best from Șaua Ciobanilor, in morning light.

  • 3

The Pietrele Doamnei stand at 1,634 m and are reef limestone: the corals of a warm sea 140 million years ago, raised to the sky. Legend has it that Petru Rareș's wife hid her treasure here, and the mountain's name comes from Rareș.

What else you can do on the trail

  • ATV: guided tours start from Izvorul Alb, at the foot of Rarău, on forest roads.
  • Gondola/chairlift at Rarău Resort: shorten the climb in summer, ski in winter (2.8 km of slope).

What grows and what moves along the trail

Flora

  • silver fir and spruce 300–500 years old, with trunks over 1 m across
  • beech, sycamore and elm in the lower part
  • yew, the “iron shrub”, rare in the Carpathians
  • edelweiss and lady's slipper (a protected orchid) on the crags
  • mountain peony in the upper clearings

Fauna

  • Carpathian red deer, you hear it roaring in September
  • brown bear, wolf and lynx: present, rarely seen
  • woodpeckers (the bark stripped off the trunks is their work)
  • capercaillie at the edge of the old forest

The species above are those documented in the area by the protected-area administration; what you see depends on season, hour and luck.

How long it takes, honestly

A linear trail: the time is one way (A → B). If you return the same way, add about two thirds; or leave a car at the far end / take the train. The duration is the one in Suceava County's official guide (Salvamont); the kilometres and driving minutes to the trailhead are from Google Maps.

  • 4 hoursone way, A to B, at your usual pace
  • 2½ hoursback the same way (estimate)
  • 6½ hoursout and back, with short breaks
  • 5–6 hoursone way, if you stop for photos and eat on the grass
  • 6–7 hoursone way, with children, grandparents or a pack full of “just in case”
