What the walking is like

The gorge trail: 3.5 km of forest road up Valea Caselor, then along the Moara Dracului stream through forest into the Moara Dracului Gorge, cut in dolomite, 60–70 m long and only 4–5 m wide, with vertical walls and overhangs. After the gorge, the clearing below Hâlga peak and forest to the northern end of the Popii Rarăului at Șaua Ciobanilor, then Rarău Peak and the hut.

Not to miss on the way

  • 1

The Moara Dracului Gorge is a geological reserve: a corridor 60–70 m long and only 4–5 m wide between dolomite walls up to 70 m high. The name comes from the mill (moara) that supposedly ran here on its own, with water and “help” from the devil.

  • 2

In summer it's a few degrees cooler between the walls than outside: the cold air stays trapped below. Bring something for your shoulders even in August.

  • 3

The Popii Rarăului (1,628 m) are limestone towers lined up along the ridge like priests at a service, hence the name. You see them best from Șaua Ciobanilor, in morning light.

  • 4

The Pietrele Doamnei stand at 1,634 m and are reef limestone: the corals of a warm sea 140 million years ago, raised to the sky. Legend has it that Petru Rareș's wife hid her treasure here, and the mountain's name comes from Rareș.

What else you can do on the trail

  • MTB: the forest road is good mountain-bike ground; enduro only with the forestry district's consent.
  • Photography: sunrise in the forest and morning mist between the trunks; tripod recommended.

What grows and what moves along the trail

Flora

  • ferns, mosses and liverworts on the damp dolomite walls
  • horsetail and butterbur on the stream bank
  • spruce and sycamore clinging to the rocks

Fauna

  • fire salamander on the path after rain (don't touch it)
  • wagtail and white-throated dipper on the stream
  • native trout in the cold stream water

The species above are those documented in the area by the protected-area administration; what you see depends on season, hour and luck.

How long it takes, honestly

A linear trail: the time is one way (A → B). If you return the same way, add about two thirds; or leave a car at the far end / take the train. The duration is the one in Suceava County's official guide (Salvamont); the kilometres and driving minutes to the trailhead are from Google Maps.

  • 5 hoursone way, A to B, at your usual pace
  • 3 hoursback the same way (estimate)
  • 8 hoursout and back, with short breaks
  • 6–8 hoursone way, if you stop for photos and eat on the grass
  • 8–9 hoursone way, with children, grandparents or a pack full of “just in case”
