What the walking is like

The most beautiful forest trail in the area. From the forestry post the path enters the Slătioara old-growth forest, a natural monument: 300–500-year-old spruces, yew, beech, sycamore, and edelweiss on the crags. Three hours through the old forest over Bâtca cu Plai, then Poiana Todirescu (a botanical reserve), below Todirescu Peak, the Popii Rarăului, Șaua Ciobanilor, between Rarău Peak and Piatra Zimbrului, and finally the Pietrele Doamnei and the hut.

Not to miss on the way

  • 1

The Slătioara old-growth forest has been a reserve since 1941 and, since 2017, a UNESCO World Heritage site (in the primeval beech forest category, although the star is the spruce). 1,064 ha, between 790 and 1,353 m, on three parallel ridges: Bâtca Neagră, Bâtca cu Plai, Bâtca Leșei.

  • 2

Spruces and firs 300–500 years old, with trunks over 1 m across and 50 m tall; locals call it “Rarău's wooden cathedral”. Fallen trees stay where they fall: people don't intervene.

  • 3

Edelweiss and lady's slipper, a protected orchid, grow on the crags. You photograph them, you don't pick them. And yes, there are bears, lynx and capercaillie; you rarely see them, but they see you.

  • 4

The Popii Rarăului (1,628 m) are limestone towers lined up along the ridge like priests at a service, hence the name. You see them best from Șaua Ciobanilor, in morning light.

What else you can do on the trail

  • Guided visits of the old-growth forest on request, through the Stulpicani forestry district; fire and tents forbidden.
  • Photography: sunrise in the forest and morning mist between the trunks; tripod recommended.
  • Climbing: routes on the Pietrele Doamnei and Piatra Zimbrului, for those with gear and experience.

What grows and what moves along the trail

Flora

  • silver fir and spruce 300–500 years old, with trunks over 1 m across
  • beech, sycamore and elm in the lower part
  • yew, the “iron shrub”, rare in the Carpathians
  • edelweiss and lady's slipper (a protected orchid) on the crags
  • mountain peony in the upper clearings

Fauna

  • Carpathian red deer, you hear it roaring in September
  • brown bear, wolf and lynx: present, rarely seen
  • woodpeckers (the bark stripped off the trunks is their work)
  • capercaillie at the edge of the old forest

The species above are those documented in the area by the protected-area administration; what you see depends on season, hour and luck.

How long it takes, honestly

A linear trail: the time is one way (A → B). If you return the same way, add about two thirds; or leave a car at the far end / take the train. The duration is the one in Suceava County's official guide (Salvamont); the kilometres and driving minutes to the trailhead are from Google Maps.

  • 4–5 hoursone way, A to B, at your usual pace
  • 3 hoursback the same way (estimate)
  • 7–8 hoursout and back, with short breaks
  • 6–8 hoursone way, if you stop for photos and eat on the grass
  • 8–9 hoursone way, with children, grandparents or a pack full of “just in case”
