A highland kitchen that has lived two hundred years beside a Romanian one.
There is no restaurant with a Polish menu in these villages. The cooking lives in the houses and comes outdoors once a year, at the Harvest Festival in Solonețu Nou, where every village lays out its own table of produce and dishes, beside the Romanian and Ukrainian neighbours. It is the best chance to taste everything at once and to talk to the people who cooked it.
The Highlanders brought a poor and filling kitchen with them: potatoes, cabbage, milk, smoked meat. Over two centuries the Romanian neighbourhood soaked into it: ciorbă, polenta, sheep's cheese in fir bark, plums. On the Bukovina table neither drove the other out; they lie side by side.
Around here, on the road between the villages, you eat at Romanian inns. Our tested addresses, with the driving time from our gate, are under Food.
