The Maramureș Mountains hold Romania's northern border, from the Tisa to the Prislop Pass, and lie within the Maramureș Mountains Natural Park, the largest natural park in the country. They are mountains of forest and pasture, with peaks above 1,900 m, lakes below the ridge and long valleys up which the narrow-gauge train climbs. The routes below are the ones marked by the park administration, with the marking, length, duration and difficulty it publishes.
You are in the Maramureș Mountains Natural Park. Camping follows the park's rules, one night, away from the shepherds' folds and from the strictly protected zones.
Open fire is forbidden in the forest, outside built fireplaces. On the ridge routes there are none.
Picking for your own use is tolerated outside the strictly protected zones. Large quantities need the park administration's consent.
The rules come from the regulations of the Maramureș Mountains Natural Park and from the Forest Code; the refuges and cabins, from the park administration's descriptions.
The Mihailecu ridge is scattered with lapiés, limestone forms carved by water.

Five hundred metres from the Paltinu cabin, across the valley, there is a built mineral spring, a borcut.
From the rock you see the Vișeu gorge, the village of Bistra and the right bank of the Tisa, in Ukraine.
The area around Tocarnea Peak has caves and shafts, carved into limestone.
The summer shelters in the clearings are pastoral huts used only during the grazing season.
On the ridge between Certina and Vâjii the route runs alongside the red triangle marking.
The route passes the spoil heap of the Dealul Bucății gallery, a trace of the mining in the area.
For part of the way it runs together with the red stripe marking coming from the Prislop Pass.
„The war road” is a cobbled track following the crest, left from the time of the border fortifications.
The route connects with the ridge of the Rodnei Mountains, used by those who then descend the Vaser valley.
From the saddle before the lake you see for the first time the pyramid of the Farcău massif, the highest in the Maramureș Mountains.
The path crosses several torrential springs before the lake.
